We were on our way home after a unsuccessful weekend at shooting astro. The weather was not in our favour, and unpredicted high cloud covered the skies both nights. After two nights of this, and the weekend coming to an end, we packed the car and got ready for the 5 hour, gravel road journey home. A couple minutes into our bumpy trip, we spotted a mature Oryx on a distant hill. I grabbed my camera in a rush, dialled in the appropriate settings, manual focused and snapped this majestic animal, seconds before it bolted off into the cover of bushes, vanishing from sight.

I loved watching this scene unfolding in South Africa’s Klein Karoo: the giraffe meandering slowly across the background; the little rhino boldly venturing a few feet from its mother before scrambling back.

I was sleeping in Cederberg National Park, and as I walked to my tent and noticed this magical starry night and took my first shot ever at astro photograpy. I think it turned out ok.

At first light of day on the way to Oudtshoorn from Stellenbosch, we almost drove our car in the ditch seeing this incredible mountain range. We barely managed to stop on the roadside to take some quick snaps, risking our lives with trucks speeding by in the downhill part of the pass.

This is the road to Prince Albert. A small town in the Karoo area of South Africa. The road seems forever straight, and so empty. It make you feel small and insignificant. The telephone poles are perfectly hypnotic against the powder blue sky and you notice small things, like birds on the wire because all is so vast and featureless, and still the road is straight, straight straight. It’s really kind of upsetting when you come upon a bend eventually, but then, oh, you can relax again cause there the road is, dipping into the horizon straight ahead of you.

As usual, my friends and I were enjoying a wonderful sunset surf on the beauty that is Cape Town’s beaches. We had ventured eagerly to Melkbos on the west coast, a small coastal village lively with passionate fisherman and surfers. Unbeknownst to me, the sunset that evening would be one of the most brilliant, inspiring ones we had ever seen - I had to capture it. This picture never fails to vividly remind me of the feeling I experience while out in the ocean, the feeling I live for. Completely calm, free and alive. No worries, No struggles. Just me and the ocean. What more could I ask for?

After a surf session at Bloubergstrand beach with my brother, I saw one of the Ola carts that we were familiar with as kids. I grabbed my Canon and, being a typical warm, sunny Cape Town day, I set the ISO as low as it could go to make the blacks, shadows and soft red of the Ola branding really pop.

Just moved to Cape Town and wanted to try out my new ND filter on a Sony a6300. Wished for some more clouds but quite happy with how it came out. You can look at my Instagram account to follow the journey @dewet_w

After 2 hours climbing the famous Lion’s head in Cape Town I took this shot using a tripod on long exposure mode. The mix of city, sea and mountains makes this town very unique. Definitely worth climbing.

A gorgeous sunset appeared after biking to the lighthouse near my aunt’s house. This is the beauty of Cape Town, South Africa. What struck me most was that my aunt and uncle were almost unfazed by it, as though they’re surrounded by nature like this (which i guess they are).
